Born in Osaka, Japan, Ai trained in oil painting at the Kyoto College of Art and Design. Her monochromatic roots however, run deep as Ai discovered her grandfather’s small, vividly contrasting black and white landscape drawings that he created as an industrial designer while serving in the war. Her explorations have taken her through an organic study of dark and light, life and death and everything in-between.
