Tom biking through Gowanus with balloons
Who knew Gowanus was this action packed? Gowanus Open Studios blew our minds (and our expectations) by starting off with an incredible Opening Reception at the Gowanus Ballroom. Courtney Jordan knows how to throw a P-A-R-T-Y!
She kicked it off with band after band performing for Honk NYC in and amongst the art installations! Imagine troops of talent banging away on drums, then turn and be blown away by an orgy of wind instruments intermingled with the crowd bouncing around the art. We had prime view of the performers all over Fiercely Curious artist, Ian Trask's interactive Sisyphus Experiment.
Batala NYC and Chaotic Noise Marching Corps
Well, I just couldn't miss out on all the fun!
Open Studios
We woke just in time to gather our balloons and open up TWO Fiercely Curious art outposts! Cecelia Rembert and TJ Volonis shared a beautifully raw and open space which showcased Cecelia's freshly finished 2014 series of 5ft oil canvas meditative abstractions and TJ's intricate copper furniture pieces and wall hanging. What an opportunity for art lovers to meet the artists and hear about their new work!
I get by with a little help from my friends. Thanks Taylor!
It was a great opportunity for people to meet Cecelia and hear her talk about her art
Ian Trask and Peter Treiber Jr. held down the fort at the brand new, almost open and oh-so-beautiful Threes Brewing! Their artwork made of reclaimed materials and wood played so perfectly well with the brewery's salvaged wood floors and ceilings. A match made in sustainable heaven.
Art Tour!
I loved taking the opportunity to leave my post to discover other talented artists on the Gowanus frontier! Here's a sneak peek of some work from my tour!
Reina Kubota and Ohno Shu. An incredible hub of Japanese talent tucked into the studio space of the late sculptor, Toshio Sasaki.
Mixed media works by Diane Bertolo with tongue-in-cheek messages
Juxtaposition- the work of Sarah E. Brook with Mara Leimanis-Ricard
Heather Cox's modern MRI studies of human anatomy through laser cut sculptures
Closing Reception
We closed out Gowanus Open Studios at our Threes Brewing show and turned up the blue lights for a Glow-in-the-Dark Art Party!
